Kate Harris - Independent Candidate (NH HD Strafford-14) & Psychologist
Kate is a mother and psychologist and who believes that an empowered political center and calm leadership can help return our focus to problem solving and sustainable policy solutions.
Kate is a Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Dover, NH where she lives with her husband, Dave Thut, who is an orthopedic surgeon and Navy veteran. They are parents of sons who attend Cal Tech and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
At age 6, Kate moved from Alexandria, VA to Maine with her parents, who purchased a retail furniture store from a WSJ classified ad. She understands small business from her inside view that spanned pay roll and inventory discussions at the kitchen table to sales and driving the delivery truck.
Kate graduated from Dartmouth College and earned her PhD from American University. In 2009, Kate and her husband chose to return to NH to settle down and finish raising their sons. While in NH, Kate served as co-chair of a ministerial search committee at her UU Church and as Vice-Chair of the Board and member of the nominating committee. At her children’s school, she led the parent board and was co-chair of the Parent Group for Cultural Competency and Inclusivity. Kate believes in the worth and dignity of all people and the covenant that we enter as citizens to look beyond personal self-interest to the common good: liberty and justice for all.
In 4th grade, Kate was president of her 4H Club and has never forgotten that she pledged “My head to clearer thinking, My heart to greater loyalty, My hands to larger service and my health to better living for my club, my community, my country and my world.” After years of watching the country split apart by polarized politics, she can no longer stay on the sidelines.
Kate grew up with model of moderate and collaborative leadership of Edmund Muskie, George Mitchell, Bill Cohen, Olympia Snow, and Jock McKernan. She believes that our country desperately needs more leaders like Senators Snow and King.
Kate is running in NH’s Strafford County District 14 for State Representative to bring calm, moderate leadership to the General Court and to hold leaders from both parties accountable to focus on problem solving and policy rather than political posturing. She is optimistic about the future of centrist-independent leadership and is committed to inspiring others to wake up and join the the effort.
